The series of Kangaroo gold coins began in 1986 under the name “Australian Nugget.” At that time, the design featured various famous gold nuggets discovered in Australia. The idea behind the series was to commemorate the gold rush era. Despite these efforts, the desired success did not materialize, leading the manufacturer to redesign the coin. Starting in 1990, the kangaroo — Australia’s national animal — was featured on the coins. Both the position and the surroundings of the depicted kangaroo changed every year. In 2008, the coin was officially renamed “Australian Kangaroo.”
The Kangaroo gold coin is produced by the Australian mint Perth Mint. Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is the oldest operating mint in Australia. Thanks to its long history, the company is considered one of the world’s largest and best-known manufacturers of gold and silver coins.
