Lunar Series II began in 2008 with a new 12-year cycle. Each year, one animal of the Chinese zodiac is presented in a changing design. Each of these twelve animals is associated with specific characteristics and, in terms of cultural significance, can be compared to the Western zodiac signs.
In addition to silver coins, the series is also available in gold and platinum. The depiction of the animal may vary depending on the metal.
Lunar coins are available in various sizes ranging from 1/20 ounce to 1 kilogram. They are typically packaged by the manufacturer in protective plastic capsules to prevent damage.
The coins are produced by the Perth Mint, the oldest mint in Australia. Since its establishment in 1899, the mint has developed into an internationally leading manufacturer of precious metal coins. The company is known for innovation and quality in coin production and even minted the world’s first one-ton gold coin.
Lunar Series II is a continuation of the successful coin program that began with the first Lunar Series in 1996. Since then, the series has proven extremely popular and is relaunched every 12 years. Due to their design, quality, and cultural significance, the coins of the Lunar Series are highly valued by numismatists and are popular among collectors.
